Botox Treatment

Botox® (Botulinum Toxin) softens fine lines and wrinkles on the face that are caused by repeated muscle contractions. Botox Cosmetic works beneath the skin's surface and temporarily reduces muscle activity, thereby minimizing dynamic wrinkles on the forehead, crow's feet, and frown lines in adults.

Additionally, Botox offers an alternative treatment for addressing TMJ disorders and the associated jaw tension and discomfort. By gently injecting into the affected facial muscles, Botox effectively alleviates TMJ symptoms, providing relief from jaw tension and often eliminating headaches induced by teeth grinding and clenching. This treatment frequently results in improved sleep quality and a noticeable enhancement in the patient’s overall daily life.

Therapeutic Botox Treatment

A Botox injection goes beyond just smoothing wrinkles — it’s a versatile tool in dentistry, tackling issues like facial and jaw pain.

Your TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) is vital for everyday functions like talking, eating, swallowing. When teeth grinding or clenching occurs, you clench your jaw or rub your teeth together repeatedly. It usually happens subconsciously over time, affecting multiple areas such as teeth, facial muscles, jaw pain, gum sensitivity, headaches, and ear pain.

Botox acts as a muscle relaxer to help you stop grinding or clenching during the day or overnight by easing the hyperactive muscles. The injections are mainly in the temporalis, frontalis, and masseter. Additional sites may be injected with Botulinum Toxins depending on the severity of the symptoms.

Botox is a non-surgical, non-invasive option that brings relief. Most patients see improvement within one to two days, though it can take up to 1-2 weeks. Results can last up to 3-4 months.

Dr. Jisu Lim, an AAFE-certified Botox provider, offers Botulinum toxin treatments to patients looking for improvement of TMJ-related symptoms.

Esthetic Improvement after TMJ Botox Treatment

Botox treatment not only offers therapeutic benefits but can also enhance your appearance. By relaxing the hyperactive jaw muscles, it gradually reduces their size, giving your face a slimmer, more defined jawline.

What to Expect

Appointment length: 10-30 min.

Pain related to the injections is typically very minimal and brief. To reduce any discomfort, numbing the proposed injection sites with a cold pack or anesthetic cream can be effective.

The Botulinum Toxin Treatment procedure is non-surgical and non-invasive, allowing patients to usually return to normal activities immediately. However, to prevent spreading the toxin to other muscles, it's advisable for patients to refrain from rubbing or massaging the injected area and to remain upright for several hours. Physical activity should also be limited for a period.

Following Botulinum Toxin TMJ Treatment, muscle tenderness typically starts to diminish almost immediately. Wrinkles may begin to fade within 24 – 48 hours after the injections, with continued improvement possible up to one week post-treatment.

There may be mild temporary bruising, numbness, or redness around the injection sites. We’ll discuss this in detail during your visit and answer all your questions.
